James Hickey - Tenterfield
James Hickey was born 28 Jun 1888 in Green Swamp, Bungulla, Tenterfield, NSW son of John & Martha Pearce the 3rd of 11 children and he also had 4 step siblings.
Was a bachelor and a working grazier when he enlisted 15 May 1916.
Shipped out of Sydney on "Borda" 17 October 1916 and disembarking at Plymouth. Marched into 9th Infantry 12 Jan 1917. Took on strength Folkstone and suffered gun shot wound to left arm and was sent to Horton Epsom. Rejoined unit and 30 Mar 1918 suffered 2nd gun shot to left calf and was sent to Trouville.
7 Sep 1918 contracted influenza and was transferred to quite a few hospitals until he was finally shipped home on 28 Mar 1919.
James went on to marry Alma Maude Chorley in 1922 and raised 10 children in Tenterfield area. He was very well liked by the community and many fond stories of his bullock teams. James passed away 10 Jan 1974 aged 85.
He is my Great Grandfather and I could not be more prouder of this fine man who I remember as a true soft gentleman.
My great uncle Frederick Arthur Roper also enlisted into 33rd Battalion 9th Brigade D Company and his cousin Martin Joseph Purcell 33rd Battalion 2nd div, both from Walcha
