Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

56 years ago today, on the 26th May 1967, Private John McCarter, 45th Battalion (Reg No-4827), fireman from 2 Tyrell Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 83. Not married. PRESBYTERIAN-8NW. 65.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 12th September 1883 to John and Elizabeth McCarter, John enlisted on the 20th August 1915 with the 1st Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A15 Star of England on the 8th March 1916.

Admitted to hospital 1.4.1916 (mumps), 6.9.1916 (influenza), 19.11.1916 (myalgia), 6.12.1916 (influenza), 20.12.1916 (influenza), 14.2.1917 (scabies).

Wounded in action - 7.8.1916 (GSW foot, mild), 7.6.1917 (GSW right knee, Battle of Messines).

There is a report that John had been wounded, 3rd occasion. I believe that according to service records only 2nd occasion.

John returned home on the 24th October 1917, being discharged medically unfit on the 22nd November 1917.

Mr. McCarter’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle East Public School Roll of Honour. Name not inscribed on the Newcastle and District Firemen Honour Roll.

I have placed poppies at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother James Cox (born 12.8.1896, Newcastle, New South Wales, labourer from 2 Tyrell Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., enlisted 29.8.1915, 31st Battalion, Reg No-2157, RTA, invalided, 14.2.1919, died 1977? not officially commemorated) also served 1st A.I.F.
