He joined British Expeditionary Force on 5th June 1916 in Alexandria (Egypt). He arrived in Marseilles (France) on 12th June 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 25th August 1916 in the field in France. He was killed in action a few weeks later on 4th September 1916. This was at Pozières in France. Following his death, Felton’s prayer book and brush were sent to his father, his next of kin, as they were determined to be the ‘sentimental items’ from his possessions. They had been retrieved by his friends. His sister, Nellie, and father, Henry, both contacted his Major requesting his kit bag. However, because this was Commonwealth property, they never received it.
Once his remains were found, Claydon was buried at Serre Road Cemetery No. 2, in Hébuterne, France. He lies in Plot 19, Row B, Grave 10. His next of kin, his father, was given the Memorial Scroll, Victory Medal, the British War Medal, and the 1914/15 Star to commemorate his service.
