William was the second of three children of Timothy Devereaux (born 1844 in County Clare, ireland) and his second wife Margaret (Maggie) Barry (born 1851 in County Clare, Ireland). Timothy and Maggie married in 1885 in Ipswich, QLD and lived there until Timothy's death in 1894. 

William was working as a Labourer in Brisbane, QLD in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF and served initially with 16th Reinforcements 9th Battalion as a Private (Service No: 5073). He was in Belgium with the 49th Battalion when he was WIA (GSW to abdomen and face) and died from his wounds two days later at 11th Casualty Clearing Station.
