Norman Benzley was born in Sunbury, Victoria in 1883 and attended school at the Sunbury School #1002.

He was working in Boulder, WA as a Draper when he enlisted in the AIF on 18/7/1915 at Kalgoolie. During training he was allotted to the 12th Battalion, and on reaching Egypt was appointed to the 52nd Battalion on their foundation.

He was 6ft tall with blue eyes and dark hair.

Norman rose through the ranks and by 1917 was CSM of the 52nd Battalion.

On October 15th 1917 a shell exploded on part of A company resulting in deaths and woundings. CSM Beasley repeatedly went to the aid of the wounded, and administered first aid until the arrival of stretcher bearere. For this action Norman was awarded the Croix de Guerre.

He returned to Australia on 12/12/1918.
