From Friends of ANZAC Cottage Inc

On September 3 in 1914, John Porter enlisted in the AIF and became part of the famous 11th Battalion. And so began the ANZAC Cottage story!!

John had served in the London Territorials before emigrating to Australia in 1911, so he had some military experience, but I suspect he joined for the regular income, sparse though it was. John was an older recruit and left behind a wife and young child when he embarked on the ss Ascanius on 30 October 1914.

I have not yet been able to identify him on the famous Cheops photo even though he did sport a pretty substantial moustache which I thought was distinctive, but looking closer at the photo, many many men in the 11th Battalion had very significant facial hair.

John's service in the AIF concluded on April 25 1915 when wounded in the left thigh. He died in 1964.
