Died on this date – 24th August…… John Thomas Good was born at Footscray, Victoria in 1880.
He married Mary Christina Clark (nee Parsons) in Victoria in 1906.She had a daughter from her previous marriage – Iris Mary Clark (b. 1903). John & Mary Good had a son in 1908 – Alfred John Good.
On 23rd August, 1915 John Thomas Good enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) as a 35 year old, married, Horse Driver from South Oakleigh, Victoria.
Private John Thomas Good, Service number 5100, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Anchises (A68) on 14th March, 1916 with the 14th Infantry Battalion, 16th Reinforcements.
He was marched into 4th Training Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir on 15th April, 1916.
On 7th June, 1916 Private Good embarked from Alexandria on H.M.T. Ionian & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 14th June, 1916. He was taken on strength of his Unit with 14th Battalion in the Field on 7th August, 1916 from 4th A.D.B.D. (Australian Divisional Base Depot) at Etaples, France.
Private John Thomas Good was wounded in action in France on 10th August, 1916 at Pozieres. He was admitted to 13th Field Ambulance on 11th August, 1916 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to shoulder. Private Good was admitted to 9th General Hospital at Rouen, France on 12th August, 1916. He embarked for England from Havre, France on 19th August, 1916 on Hospital Ship Marama.
On 20th August, 1916 Private Good was admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, England with shrapnel wound/s to shoulder – severe. He was reported to be in a dangerous condition.
Private John Thomas Good died on 24th August, 1916 at King’s Heath Hospital, Birmingham, England from wounds received in action in France - G.S.W. to Shoulder.
He was buried in Lodge Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, West Midlands, England on 26th August, 1916.
On 19th April, 1920 Mrs Good, widow of the late Private Good, was advised by Base Records that his remains had been exhumed from former site & re-interred. His name is now remembered on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Screen Wall B10. 1. 160 as he does not have a headstone.
There are 55 WW1 Australian War Graves in Lodge Hill Cemetery, Birmingham – all remembered on CWGC Screen Wall. None of them have headstones.
