The son of Clive and Lousia Curtayne, Tom Mennell Curtayne was born in Nyngan NSW in 1894 and raised in Orange.
He worked as a baker’s carter, enlisting in the 20th Battalion unit of the Australian Imperial Force at age 21, on the 7th September 1915.
Private Curtayne embarked on the HMAT Runic from Sydney on the 20th January 1916 for service on the World War One battlefields of France.
He served in the Battle of Pozieres, a significant battle in Australian military history, and was sadly killed in action on the 4th August 1916. Private Curtayne also has no known grave. His name is inscribed on the Villers-Bretonneux memorial in France.
