Ernest was the second of five children of Thomas Mauger Selway (b1877 in Stepney, South Australia) and Emilia Louisa Paulina Schottelius (b1879 in Norwood, South Australia). Thomas (a Butcher) and Emilia married in 1897 in Adelaide, South Australia where they settled and raised their family.

Ernest was a Clerk in 1917 when he enlisted in the AIF. He had previously had four years with Senior Cadets and transferred to the Militia (21st ASC). Ernest served in France (Private; Service No:62046) with 43rd Infantry Battalion and 4th Mobile Veterinary Section. He was Discharged in September 1919.

In 1924 Ernest married Rita Lenore Bird (b1900 in Solomontown, South Australia). The couple settled in Hindmarsh, SA where Ernest was a Butcher in 1943 when he enlisted in the RAAF (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:152008).

By the early 1950s Ernest and Rita had Divorced, and in 1959 Ernest married Clarice Grace Paul (nee Coles; b1901 in Solomontown, Port Pirie, SA). Ernest died in 1980 and Clarice in 1982.
