Biography
Sidney was actually only 17 Yrs 7 months when he enlisted, though his enlistment ages shows 19yrs.
He served with the 7th Battery Field Artillery, later 3rd, serving from August 1914 until he was discharged in March 1919.
His records shows that he was wounded and gassed on numerous occasions, always recovering and returning to the trenches, it also shows he was caught gambling and AWL. For one so young, understandable but 4 August 1917 he also showed his courage whilst working with others to put out a fire which was threatening an ammunition dump and stores, for this act of bravery, he was awarded the Military Medal.
Sadly he lost his brother Lt Normal L Weynand on the 23 July 1916 at Pozeries.
Sidney was dangerously ill after being gassed several times, recovered and returned, yet in a postcard home to his cousin (My grandmother, his passing comment on being gassed, gives no indication on how serious it was).
Sidney returned home, later married but no children. He and his wife owned / managed several hotels, he passed away aged 52 and is buried in Woronora Cemetery. Wall of Memory - AIF Services.
