Died on this date – 8th December…… Private Evan Jones was born in Llandderfel, near Bala in the county of Merioneth, Wales in 1890.

He came to Australia when he was 24 years old & enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 26th September, 1915 as a 25 year old, single, Tram Conductor from Llewellyn Street, Merewether, Newcastle, NSW.

Private Evan Jones embarked from Sydney on HMAT Ballarat (A70) on 16th February, 1916 with the 7th Infantry Brigade, 30th Infantry Battalion, 3rd Reinforcements & disembarked at Suez on 23rd March, 1916.

He joined 30th Battalion at Ferry Post on 1st April, 1916.

On 16th June, 1916 Private Jones embarked from Alexandria to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 23rd June, 1916 for active service.
Private Evan Jones was wounded in action in France on 20th July, 1916 at Fromelles. He was admitted to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station on 20th July, 1916 then was transferred by Ambulance Train to 3rd Canadian General Hospital at Boulogne, France & admitted on 21st July, 1916 with GSW (gunshot wound/s) to arm. Private Jones was invalided to England on Hospital Ship Cambria on 22nd July, 1916.
He was admitted to Military Hospital at Silver Street, Edmonton, England on 22nd July, 1916 with GSW (gunshot wound/s) to his right forearm & fracture to his radius & ulna (slight). He was discharged from 2nd Auxiliary Hospital to furlo from 26th October, 1916 to 10th November, 1916 & was then to report to Perham Downs.

On 13th November, 1916 Private Jones was marched in to No. 1 Command Depot at Perham downs, Wiltshire, England from furlough. He was marched in to 8th Training Battalion at Hurdcott, Wiltshire the same day.

He was admitted to Military Hospital at Fovant, Wiltshire on 3rd December for observation.
Private Evan Jones died at 3.55 a.m. on 8th December, 1916 at the Military Hospital at Fovant, Wiltshire, England of Bronchitis.
He was buried in Compton Chamberlayne War Graves Cemetery, Wiltshire, England on 9th December, 1916 – Front Row, Grave Plot # 6. There are 27 other WW1 Australian War Graves located here.

Evan JONES (Service Number2075) was born on 8th February 1890 in Hangor, Bala, Merioneth, Wales. He first worked for the NSW Tramways as a casual conductor on the electric trams in Newcastle on 18th December 1913. He was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 18th July 1915.

He enlisted at Newcastle on 22nd September 1915. He was unmarried and gave his father, still living in Wales, as his next of kin. He was allotted to the 3rd Reinforcements to the 30th Battalion. He left Australian from Sydney aboard HMAT ‘Ballarat’ on 16th February 1916 and reached Suez (Egypt) on 23rd March. He joined the 30th Battalion at Zeitoun and after further training embarked at Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force in France, passing through Marseilles on 23rd June.

He received a gunshot wound to his arm on 20th July 1916 and was passed through the 3rd Canadian General Hospital at Boulogne to the 16th Military Hospital at Edmonton. Although the wound was described as ‘slight’ it involved fractures to both bones of the forearm.

After his recovery he was granted furlough in England and then allotted to the No. 1 Command Depot and the 8th Training Battalion.

While he was still with the Training Battalion he was admitted to Fovant Hospital sick with Bronchitis. He died from this on 8th December 1916. He was buried with full military honours at Compton Chamberlyne Cemetery, Wiltshire.
