Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Mimi Cemetery, N.S.W.
On the 20th September 1917, Sapper George Muir, 1st Australian Tunnelling Company (Reg No-5578), storeman from Rawson Street, Aberdare, New South Wales, was Killed in Action during the Battle of Menin Road, Belgium, age 42 years 9 months. Cause of death not definitive.
16 years of age upon arrival in Australia.
Not married.
Born at New Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland possibly December 1874 to George (died 15.12.1899, Minmi, N.S.W., age 68, buried at Left Hand Side, Section 25, Plot 046), and Janet Murdock or Murdoch Muir (died?), George enlisted on the 24th May 1916 with the Tunnelling Companies, October 1916, Reinforcements, age 42? years 1 or 4? Months, at Cessnock, New South Wales.
Report that George had presented himself for a medical examination for active service, and was accepted. Roll of Honour circular submitted by brother William, from Northcote Street, Aberdare, N.S.W., states that George was rejected the 1st time he tried to enlist.
Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on the 25th October 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 28.12.1916.
Proceeded O/Seas to France from Folkestone, England 28.1.1917.
Taken on Strength 1st Australian Tunnelling Company 17.3.1917.
Admitted to hospital 24.3.1917 (diarrhoea).
Wounded in action - 20.9.1917.
Pronounced Killed in Action 21.11.1917.
George’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 7), Belgium.
Place of Association - Aberdare, New South Wales, Australia.
Mr. Muir’s name has also been inscribed on the Aberdare Memorial Gates, unveiled on the 5th September 1925, 105 names inscribed, Minmi St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour and the Cessnock War Memorial.
I have placed poppies at the memorialised Muir gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of George for God, King & Country. Left Hand Side, Section 25, Plot 046.
Memorial inscription now almost unreadable.
