Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

William Johnson was awarded a Military Medal during the heavy fighting around Ypres October 1917, his recommendation reading, “In operations near Hooge, east of Ypres from 1st to 9th October 1917, Corporal Johnson was NCO of the Battalion transport and went forward daily with rations and supplies along heavily shelled lines of communication. On one occasion he was sent in command of our Brigade train of 10 limbers with ammunition when a barrage was put down in the vicinity of the dump and the traffic became so congested that many drivers left their limbers and came back with their horses only. Corporal Johnson and two of his drivers were wounded but by his personal example and coolness he kept his transport together and got them back safely.”

He returned to Tasmania, Australia in 1919 and passed away there in 1972 at 83 years of age.
