Son of George Vidler and Mary Ann Vidler nee Sutherland of Euroa, Victoria.

Brother of Edward Gerald Vidler who died of pneumonia at sea on 27 July 1916 aboard HT Ayrshire. Commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, England and Gilbert Alexander Vidler who returned to Australia on 13 August 1919 having served with the 3rd Machine Gun Battalion

Commenced return to Australia on 9 March 1919 aboard HT Kashmir disembarking on 30 April 1919
