Eric was the eldest son of Thomas and Florence Hassall.  He joined the Bank of NSW in 1911.  During his career as a bank officer Eric was appointed to Newton, the Inspector's Department at Head Office and then the North Sydney branch.

Eric was one of the first to enlist and served in Gallipoli before being evacutated to Egypt due to illness.  He then went to France where he was killed in action at the age of 22 years.

He was awarded the Star 1914/15 6523 , British War Medal 851 and Victory Medal 808.

ERIC MARSDEN HASSALL, the son of Mr. Thomas Frederic and Mrs. Florence Hewitt Hassall, was born at Broken Hill on 7th July, 1894. He was educated at King’s College, Goulburn, and joined the service of the Bank at Yass on 26th October, 1910. His subsequent appointments were to Newtown in December, 1911; to the Inspector’s Department, at Head Office, in January, 1913; and to North Sydney in February, 1914.

He enlisted a few days after the outbreak of war, and joined the 2nd Battery of the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, subsequently joining the Headquarters Observation Staff.

On 12th November, 1916, in the early morning, seven Head-quarters Observation Officers were in their dug-out. All but Eric Hassall, who was on duty at 3 a.m., were asleep when a shell struck the dug-out. Eric Hassall and five others were killed, and one recovered from the wounds he received.
