Alfred Leopold Fielder was one of three sons of Francis Edward and Margaret Victoria Fielder, of Albury, New South Wales, who enlisted in WW1. Two of their sons died and the other was a prisoner of war in Germany until late 1918.
Alfred’ brother, Pte. Ted Fielder, died of pneumonia in Liverpool camp while undergoing training during August 1915. He was only 19 years of age.
Alfred only joined the 3rd Battalion on the Western Front on 23 April 1917. He was reported missing only two weeks later during the heavy fighting near Bullecourt.
Another brother, 1542 Pte. Frank Fielder 13th Battalion AIF was also reported missing on the 11 April 1917 at Bullecourt. He was later confirmed as a prisoner of war in Germany and returned to Australia in 1919.
