Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Captain Henry Barton Borwick MC enlisted in the AIF in 1915 - he had served with Senior Cadets (Melbourne University) and the AFA. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in May 1915 when he embarked from Melbourne with 2nd Field Artillery Brigade on board SS Makarini. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli and the Western Front, where he was WiA on 21 May 1917 - GSW foot. In September 1917 he was promoted to Captain and awarded the Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He established communication back to Brigade Head Quarters and was largely responsible for clearing up a difficult situation' (AWM). With his injury deemed a permanent disbility, Captain Borwick's appointment was terminated on 23 March 1918. Older brother Sir Thomas Faulkner Borwick also served in WWI.

Born in 1985 in Melbourne Victoria, Henry was the youngest of five children (two survived infancy) of Henry Barton Borwick Snr (b1848 in Oxfordshire, England) and Hannah Mary Watson (b1854 in Ballan, Victoria). Henry Snr and Hannah married in 1885 in  Melbourne, Victoria where they raised their family and Henry Snr was an Accountant.

Henry attended Scotch College and was a Student at Melbourne University - he served with Senior Cadets and the AFA prior to enlisting in the AIF. Henry settled in Melbourne where he worked as an Engineer and in 1922 married Elizabeth Muriel Maddock (b1895 in Portland, Victoria). Henry continued as a Volunteer with the AMF in command of a Battery of Artillery until 1923, and served in the RAAF in WWII (Flying Officer; Service No:256789). Elizabeth died in 1968 and Henry in 1974.
