Son of William Bolan and Elizabeth Helen(sometimes her middle is given as Ellen) Bolan nee Clarke of 40 Somerville Road, Yarraville, Victoria.

Brother of Ellen Jane Bolan, Hilda Alice Bolan, Maud May Bolan and William Henry Bolan who returned to Australia on 25 January 1919 having served with the General Service Reinforcements. Half brother to Bertha Mabel Bolan
