Died on this date - 10th November......Private Norman Batten was born at Bowden, South Australia in 1899. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 4th January, 1918 as an 18 year old Factory Hand.
Private Batten embarked from Adelaide on 6th August, 1918. He was sent to Ship's Hospital for 4 days with Influenza & arrived in England on 13th October, 1918. He was sent to 9th Training Battalion at Fovant, Wiltshire on 13th October, 1918 & hospitalised on 26th October, 1918.
Private Norman Batten died on 10th November, 1918 (the eve of the Armistice) at Military Hospital, Fovant, Wiltshire, England from Influenza & Broncho Pneumonia

Son of John and Annie (nee McRAE) BATTEN of Burke Street, West Croydon, South Australia. Born at Adelaide.

Other details from Roll of Honour Circular - Died of pneumonia. Mother: "It will be noticed he died on the eve of Armistice Day. We were all rejoicing; little did we know of his death."

 

Burial Report regarding the Late 62066 Private Batten

'Deceased was buried with full Military honours the coffin draped with the Australian flag being borne to his graveside on a Gun-carriage.  The cortege was preceded by a Firing Party and Band from the 9th Australian Training Battalion.  Six of the deceased's Unit comrades supported the Pall. 

3 Officers and about 100 N.C.O.s and Men from the deceased's late Unit followed the remains to the graveside. Wreaths from Officers N.C.O. and Men from the Unit were placed on the grave after the "Last Post" had been sounded.

Headquarters A.I.F. Depots in United Kingdom were represented at the funeral.'

The Officiating Clergyman was Chaplain T. McVittie (OPD) 9th Training Battalion Fovant

Date of interment - 15th November 1918 at 11:00am
