From the 'Hassall Family Papers': Rowland Thomas (Top) Hassall who was born on 24 October 1893 at Coloola, Jembaicumbene near Braidwood and died on 15 May 1966. He married in 1929 at Bowarl, Mary M. Cordeaux eldest daughter of Arthur Cordeaux of Bendooley, Berrima. He had a significant career. He attended King's College, Goulburn and Barker College, Hornsby and served in the Light Horse and in Gallipoli and Egypt. In 1941 he formed and commanded the 14th Australian Machine Gun Regiment but was rejected for overseas service so he became Officer-in-Charge of Civil Defence in Braidwood. He was a member of the Braidwood Pastures Protection Board and councillor of the Tallaganda Shire Council and involved in many community activities as well as the Braidwood P.A. and H. Society. He was a partner in the Braidwood stock and station agents, Hassall and MacDonald. He was a grazier and bred Poll Herefords and became president of the Braidwood branch of Graziers' Association.341 His brother was Arthur Malcom Hassall who was born in 1895 at Bowraville and died in 1896 at Braidwood; and his sister was Helen A. Hassall who was born in 1897 at Braidwood and married in 1920 in Sydney, Ronald L. MacDonald
