Aubrey asked permission from his mother to enlist at the age of 15 yrs and 3 months, on 9 February 1916. He declared that his age was 21 yrs and 1 month. She only agreed if he didn't go near the front line. He was assigned to the 9th Field Ambulance which was formed 9 March 1916. He served as a stretcher bearer at Tyneside Houplines, Messines Ypre 1 & 2, Villers Brettoneux to Hindenburg Line. Aubrey had his 16th Birthday on the Western Front and participated in many extra sporting and concert activities during his time in France. He returned home on the Takada on 7 September 1919. He was discharged on 31 October 1919 after serving for 3 yrs and 266 days. A lovely man, who seemly was unaffected by the war, compared by many others, he never spoke of his experience with his 3 sons. Aubrey died on 4 September 1953 while driving his car with his family, luckily after he felt chest pains he pulled over and stopped, thereby preventing what could have been a far worse tragedy.
