His older brother, 6027 Pte Edwin Herbert Lander Hales, 38th Battalion AIF, had previously died of wounds, 10 March 1917, aged 26.

Hedley Hales only joined his unit in France on the 4 September 1917, and was killed in action one month later at the Battle of Broodseinde near Ypres, in Belgium.

They were both the sons of Thomas and Mary Ann Rosina Hales of Woomelang, Victoria.
