George Gordon Ryan was a World War 1 participant, born in Blackwood South Australia on the 27th of August 1893. George was brought up by his mother Mrs J.G. Ryan in a small town house on Waters street Norwood, South Australia. As a teenager, George attended Blackwood High School. During George's early years’ times were tough. George lost his father at an early age.
George decided to sign up for a trumpeter in the World War 1. George Gordan Ryan was enlisted to World War 1 on the 27th August, 1914. During the preparation of the War, George had to give up his work as being a full time carpenter to serve Australia as a trumpeter. Trainings were held in physically and mentally tough conditions.
George Gordan Ryan was in the 3rd Light Horse Regiment which was raised in Adelaide on 17 August 1914. Acording to the 3rd Light Horse Unit Diary, George Gordan Ryan filled in as a sniper to fight in the Batlle of Romani, Battle of Magdhaba and Battle of Gaza. The 3rd Light Horse Regiment was known for its success in battles.
Although most of the 3rd Light House recruits were enlisted in South Australia, one of the regiment's three squadrons was composed of Tasmanians and was raised and trained in Hobart. The two components sailed from their home ports in late October 1914 and arrived in Egypt in the second week of December. Here, they joined the 1st and 2nd Regiments to form the 1st Light Horse Brigade.
