Son of John Vane and Jane Vane of Woodstock, NSW. Brother of Thomas Vane who returned to Australia on 14 February 1919 having served with the 55th Battalion
Husband of Susan Vane nee Sykes of Woodstock, NSW. John and Susan married during 1901c.
On 7 September 1917 John completed a course at the Southern Commercial School of Farriery and qualified as a Cold shoer.
Commenced return to Australia on 15 April 1918 aboard HT Marathon disembarking on 13 June 1918 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney.
