George French was killed by a heavy shell near Pozieres on his 23rd birthday. It was also 12 months to the day from his enlistment. His older brother, 1941 Warrant Officer Alfred Charles French 15th Light Horse Regiment was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1918. Another brother, 414 Pte. Herbert Rayner French 3rd Light Horse Regiment enlisted in 1914 and returned in 1919.
They were the sons of Charles and Ellen French of Sisters Creek, Tasmania.
