Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

William Miller was one of four sons of Thomas and Julia Ann Miller who served in the AIF. He was born at Lockhart’s Creek, near Tallangatta in Victoria. The father, Thomas, had left the family in around 1900 so the children were raised by their mother.

William’s brother, 1153 Pte. George Miller 3rd Battalion AIF was killed in action at Gallipoli on 9 July 1915, aged 24.

William joined the 8th Battalion in Belgium on 10 September 1916. He served for over 20 months on the Western Front before he was killed in action on 30 June 1918 near Morbecque in France.

His other two brothers, 429 Pte. Robert Miller 57th Battalion AIF was returned to Australia in mid-1918 with a serious gunshot wound to his chest, and 6778 Pte. Ernest Leslie Miller 3rd Battalion AIF, was twice wounded and returned to Australia in 1919.
