John Rawlinson Ford was the son of Rudolph Atherfold Zillman and Agnes Agnes Emily Airey who resided at Caboolture, Queensland. His family were part of the pioneering Zillman families of Caboolture and they owned dairy farms in the area. John was single, dairy farming in Upper Caboolture, Queensland, when he enlisted. An older brother, Thomas Charles Leopold [522] also enlisted. John continued as a dairy farmer after the war.
