George Campbell Curlewis was born in Queenscliffe, Victoria on the 16.3.1891. When he enlisted at Helena Vale on the 8.9.1914, he was 23 years 5 months old, a member of a Rifle Club, and Presbyterian. He had worked as a clerk with the Commercial Association at Fremantle and at Beverley. His next of kin was his father, GC Curlewis of Brookton. George was described as 5 feet 8½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 34-37 inches, fair complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair. He was allocated Service number 5 and appointed to the 16th Infantry Battalion E Company as a Captain. George embarked on A40 Ceramic on 22.12.1914. He was wounded on the 2.5.15, promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on the 10.5.15 when Lieutenant Bruns EOA was killed. On the 28th August 1915 he reported sick, complaining of debility and a cough. He was sent to Alexandria, then England. A medical board on the 19th Oct 1915 concluded that he had tuberculosis, and he was returned to Australia on the Runic on the 7.11.15 as unfit for service. His appointment was terminated on the 31.5.1916.
George enlisted again during World War 2 on the 19.12.1939 at Perth, aged 48 with service number W237391. Next of kin was his wife, Elsie and he had a daughter-in-law living in Victoria Avenue Dalkeith. His occupation was Estate Agent and sworn valuator. His home address was in Northam, and he was appointed Lieutenant serving in Citizen Military Forces Unit HQ WC Area 28C. On the 18.12.39, he was appointed DAAG W Command Full time Duty Area Officer. In 1942 he was seconded as Q C Officer Base Merredin Area, then promoted to Captain on the 8.7.43. The following day, he was put on the retired list.
After leaving farming, George settled in Cottesloe. He was a Justice of the Peace and in the New Years Honours List of 1964, he was awarded an MBE for community and welfare services.
George died on the 19.11.1982 in Mosman Park, aged 91. His ashes were scattered over the garden at Karrakatta Cemetery.
