Private/Trooper Arnold Ward (Service Nos:1514/883) enlisted in the AIF on 4 December 1914 and was attached to 3rd Light Horse Regiment 4th Reinforcement when he embarked with his Unit on 1 April 1915 from Adelaide for Suez on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln. In 1917 Trooper Ward served with 2nd Camel Corps at Bir-el-Abd, and was attached to 3rd Light Horse Regiment on 15 February 1918 when he embarked from Suez for Melbourne on board HT Ulysses. Private Ward was Discharged on 3 May 1918 - Medically Unfit. In WWII, Private Ward (Service No:S2818) enlisted in the ACMF - graded Clerk, and was a Lance Sergeant attached to DOR Wayville at Discharge on 26 January 1944 - Medically Boarded. Brothers Harry and Spencer also served in WWI.
Arnold was born at Mt Barker, South Australia in 1896, seventh of ten children of William Henry Ward (b1856 at Kangaroo Flat, Bendigo, Victoria) and his first wife Sarah Adelina Gidley (b1865 in Adelaide, South Australia). William and Sarah lived in Strathalbyn, Petersburg, Umberumberka via Broken Hill, Mt Barker and the Yorke Peninsula before settling in Adleaide. William worked as a Traveller, Greengrocer, Shopkeeper and Agent.
Arnold worked as a Farm Hand in Edithburgh SA before enlisting in the AIF, and in 1919 in Alberton married Mary Kathleen Daniell (b1895 in Adelaide, South Australia). Arnold and Mary settled in Torrensville in Adelaide, where they raised their family and Arnold was a Tramway Employee (Motorman/Driver). Mary died in 1955 and Arnold in 1969.
