Albert suffered a shell wound to the abdomen on the 16 April 1918 and died in the 20th Casualty Clearing Station 5 days later. He was married to Mary Gertrude Ely.

His younger brother, 4258 Private Edward James Ely 30th Battalion AIF died of wounds in Belgium 29 September 1917, age 33.
