213 Sgt. Alec McKenzie Hepburn, 14th Battalion A.I.F. another of 'Jacka's Mob' resting here in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Woking UK.
Alec enlisted in October 1914, while at Gallipoli he received a GSW to the wrist at Courtney's Post on the 1st May 1915 and he was later wounded again in France at Pozieres on the 8th August 1916 during the Battle of the Somme.
Sadly he was to die of disease (Dysentry) in a London Hospital on the 12th November 1917

Died on this date – 12th November…… Alec McKenzie Hepburn was born at Newport, near Williamstown, Victoria in 1893.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 14th September, 1914 as a 21 year old, single, Clerk from Newport, Victoria.

Alec Hepburn stated on his Attestation Papers that he had served for 1 ½ years with Victoria Rifles 51st Infantry but had left the district. His enlistment was “subject to teeth being attended to.”

Corporal McKenzie Hepburn (name as per Embarkation Roll), Service number 213, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 22nd December, 1914 with the 14th Infantry Battalion “B” Company.

He was promoted to Lance Sergeant on 1st February, 1915. On 12th April, 1915 he proceeded to join M.E.F. (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) at Gallipoli.

Lance Sergeant Alec McKenzie Hepburn was wounded in action at Dardanelles on 3rd May, 1915 with G.S.W. (Gunshot wound/s) to wrist & shoulder. He was admitted to Hospital at Tel-el-Kebir on 7th May, 1915. Lance Sergeant Hepburn was transferred as fit to Sidi Gaber on 17th July, 1915.

From 14th December, 1915 Lance Sergeant Hepburn was in charge of Kits at Cairo.

He was marched in to Serapeum & rejoined his Unit on 7th May, 1916 from Base Kit Stores.

Lance Sergeant Alec McKenzie Hepburn proceeded to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) from Alexandria on 1st June, 1915. He disembarked at Marseilles, France on 8th June, 1916.

On 12th June, 1916 Lance Sergeant Hepburn was to be Sergeant while at Baillieu – vice Sergeant Ayre evacuated sick & to date from 2nd June, 1916.

Sergeant Alec McKenzie Hepburn was wounded in action in France on 8th August, 1916. He was admitted to 3rd Field Ambulance on 9th August, 1916 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to Shoulder. Sergeant Hepburn was transferred & admitted to 8th Stationary Hospital at Wimereux on 10th August, 1916. He embarked for England from Boulogne on 16th August, 1916 on Hospital Ship Stad Antwerpen.

He was admitted to War Hospital at Keighley, England on 17th August, 1916 with shrapnel wound to Buttocks (as listed on Casualty Form – Active Service) (G.S.W. to Shoulder was listed on Hospital Admissions form).

On 3rd November, 1916 Sergeant Hepburn was transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford with G.S.W. to Shoulder & Buttocks. He was placed on Supernumerary List from 8th November, 1916.

Sergeant Hepburn was discharged to Furlo from 3rd January, 1917 to 18th January, 1917 & was then to report to Wareham. He was taken on strength of No. 4 Command Depot at Wareham, Dorset on 15th January, 1917 from Headquarters London, after Furlough.

He was transferred to 65th Battalion from 14th Battalion on 23rd March, 1917 while posted at Wareham. He was transferred back to 14th Battalion on 29th April, 1917.

On 29th April, 1917 Sergeant Hepburn proceeded overseas to France from Infantry Draft Depot at Perham Downs, Wiltshire, England to reinforce 14th Battalion. He joined 4th A.D.B.D. (Australian Divisional Base Depot) at Etaples, France on 30th April, 1917.

Sergeant Hepburn reported sick on 1st May, 1917 & was admitted to 26th General Hospital at Etaples, France with Phimosis. He was transferred to 6th Convalescent Depot on 19th May, 1917 then re-admitted to 26th General Hospital on 30th May, 1917 for circumcision. Sergeant Hepburn was transferred to England on 12th July, 1917 on Princess Elizabeth.
He was admitted to 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell, London, England on 12th July, 1917 – P.U.O. (Pyrexia (fever) of unknown origin).

Sergeant Alec McKenzie Hepburn died at 10.15 pm on 12th November, 1917 at 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell, London, England from Dysentery.
He was buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey where around 360 WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
