'This Officer has done consistently good work during the year.  He has shown considerable devotion to dity as Brigade Transport Officer.  During the operations at MALT TRENCH in February last, and LAGNICOURT in Mrch last, he displayed conspicuous courage and devotion to duty.  In the recent operations at WESTHOEK on 20/9/17 he personally superintended all transport arrangements.  He was constantly under the enemy barrage.  By his skill and resourfulness in the management of the horses, the losses were extremely light.'

John returned to Australia 22 May 1919 and was discharged 25 July 1919.  He spent some years in the Ilfracombe / Muttaburra district, possibly at Summer Hill and Leebrook, before moving to the Hughenden district where he bought Koonkool.
