William was the son of Charles and Henry Mary Hooper of Orbost, Victoria. He and his younger brother Basil John Hooper had moved to Mooroopna about three years before the war, to work on a farm there. Their mother had passed away in 1903.
His brother, 378 Pte. Basil John Hooper 7th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at the Anzac landing on 25 April 1915.
