An Original Anzac memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.
On the 10th August 1915, Private Harold Hayes, 13th Battalion (Reg No-272), tin miner or labourer from Tingha, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at Hearins Post near No. 3 Outpost, Gallipoli Peninsula, Gallipoli Campaign, age 20. Cause of death not stated.
Born at Tomingley, New South Wales about 1895 to John (died 17.4.1903, age 58, Tingha, N.S.W., buried Tingha Cemetery?) and Elizabeth Hayes (died 10.9.1923, age 71) of Moontown, Rous Street, East Maitland, New South Wales, Harold enlisted on the 23rd September 1914 at Sydney, N.S.W.
Harold is believed to be resting at New Zealand No 2 Outpost Cemetery, Gallipoli,Turkey. Sp. Mem. 9.
Mr. Hayes’s name has been inscribed on the Tingha RSL War Memorial.
Place of Association - Tingha, New South Wales, Australia.
An individual Memorial plaque has been placed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall, located in the grounds of the cemetery, date and person responsible unknown.
Older brother Mark (born about 1893, Tomingley, New South Wales, miner, enlisted 13.5.1915, Reg No-1090, 19th Battalion, RTA 8.5.1919, Lieutenant, 17th Battalion, awarded Military Cross, laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the 14th February 1956, age 63 - ANGLICAN 1-71. 9.
