Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Have I been forgotten?

39 years ago today, on the 7th December 1981, Private Archibald Cox, 30th Battalion (Reg No-2306), hospital attendant from Fullerton Cove, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 86. ANGLICAN 3-231. 51.

Born at Fullerton Cove, New South Wales on the 12th March 1895 to James and Ann Cox; husband of Ruby Evelyn Cox nee Hubbuck (married 1918, Lambton, N.S.W., died 1971), Archie enlisted September 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 10.12.1916 (trench feet, severe), 27.6.1917 (amputation both feet), Archie was invalided home January 1918, being discharged as medically unfit on the 7th February 1918.

Mr Cox’s name has been inscribed on the Williamtown Public School Roll of Honour (unveiled on the 1st December 1917, 33 names now inscribed) and the Williamtown Anglican Church Roll of Honour.

Unfortunately, Archie’s name has not been inscribed on the headstone with his wife Ruby, so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label to honour his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance, Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.

Lest We Forget.
