William Henry Hatton
WILLIAM HENRY HATTON (1890-1952) born at Yass, son of Emily Jane Hatton. William enlisted in the 1st AIF. Private 2381, 4th Infantry Battalion, he enlisted on June 8th, 1915. He was guest of honour at a farewell function in July 1915. The townsfolk gave him a tremendous send off and the Mayor, Alderman Michael Coen, presented him with a wristlet watch. The party was held in the Australian Hotel owned by Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Comens after hours. It was said that Billy anticipated an early departure for the spot where the bullets fly and the atmosphere is at time, a bit unpleasant. He had been a member of one of the civilian training units, and has had a preliminary taste of what the future may be like, in mimic warfare, and this has given zest to his patriotic feeling. He was enthusiastic to help defend the Empire and cordially advised all those who are of an age to do so, to follow his example. The party continued with flowery speeches, songs, recitations and music He was inducted on November 20th, 1915. Embarked for Europe on HMAT A67 Orsova on July 14th, 1915 from Sydney. He was discharged on July 31st, 1915 at Melbourne. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British war Medal, Victory Medal.
