Charles was the third son of Sidney Hugh Stannard and Emily Alice Kilroy. He was born in brayne near Brisbane Queensland on 23rd Sep 1897. He served 4 years as a senior cadet before enlisting on 30 Apr 1915 in Sydney. in the 3rd Battalion AIF He was a clerk and named his mother Emily Stannard of "Clifton" Park Street Arncliffe as NOK. He was unmarried.Charles was taken on strength on 22 Jan 1916 to Tel-el-Kebir then onto France on 23rd March of the same year. where he was wounded in the left arm on 29 Jun 1916. Several times admitted to hospital for shell shock and fever. wounded for a second time in August 1916 .Killed in action on 10 Nov 1917 in Belgium not long after he had leave in the UK
