William Cleaver Robinson Alexander Doig was born in Fremantle on the 21.10.1891. He enlisted at Blackboy Hill on the 17.8.15, an accountant at the Fremantle Wool and Hide Company, aged 24 years 9 months. Cleve, as he was known, gave his denomination as Protestant, Church of Scotland. The Doigs produced many good footballers, including Cleve. The Doig medal for the Fairest and Best Player for the Fremantle Dockers in the national AFL is named after the family. Next of kin was his mother, Agnes Doig, of 8 Howard St Fremantle. Cleve was described as being 5 feet 6 inches tall and had a chest measurement of 35-37½ inches, light complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. He was allocated Service number 3449 and appointed a Private with the 16th Infantry Battalion. Cleve embarked from Fremantle on the 27.10.1915 on HMAT Benella A24. He was wounded in action on the 11.8.16, suffering shell shock, then he developed tonsilitis. On the 11.4.17, he was reported missing. He had been taken Prisoner of War by the Germans and interred at Dülmen, Reincourt. Following his release, he returned to England on the 1.1.19 and was granted leave from 10.2.19 to 31.7.19 to undertake some courses and train as a wool classifier. He returned to Australia on the 17.10.1919 on the Plassy. Cleve was discharged on the 1.2.1920. After the war the family continued their tanning business. Cleve died on the 8.3.1968 in East Fremantle, aged 77. He is buried in Fremantle Cemetery, General Lawn A grave 0004.
