102 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 30th April 1921, Private Walter Alfred George Taylor, referred to as Wally, 1st Australian Machine Gun Battalion (Reg No-5778), labourer from 6 Jubilee Lane, off Hunter Street West, Newcastle, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 23. ANGLICAN 1-19. 126. Not married.
Wally had died on the 28th April 1921 at the Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W. of acute pancreatitis.
Born at Tomago, New South Wales on the 11th November 1897 to Alfred Ernest John and Catherine Taylor, Wally enlisted on the 10th August 1915 with the 1st Battalion, Reg No-4879, at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Services no longer required - 13.3.1916 (breaking camp, absent without leave, desertion by failing to embark, 216 days in camp).
Reenlisted on the 12th April 1916 with the 1st Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A55 Kyarra on the 3rd June 1916.
Wounded in action - 5-8.5.1917 (GSW right leg, slight).
Wally returned home on the 10th August 1919, being discharged on the 23rd December 1919.
Mr. Taylor’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Wally’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
