Biography contributed by Steve Larkins

Herbert Sydney Turner (1894-1971)

Herbert Sydney Turner was born at Bowden, on 8th August 1894 to Thomas and Martha  Turner  of 47 Gloucester Rd, Nailsworth.  Educated at Nailsworth Primary School he was later apprenticed to Mr R Clisby of Gilberton for five years, to become a qualified carpenter.  He had 1 year with the senior fadets and another 5 with the 80th Infantry (Militia) battalion, before enlisting into the AIF on 11 August 1915.

He embarked with the 32nd Battalion on June 24 1916, having been appointed Temporary Sergeant in March 1916. Herbert was to see service in France and Belgium.

The 32nd Battalion was badly mauled at Fromelles on 19/20th July on the left flank of the 5th Division attack, and Herbert formed part of a reinforcement draft.  He reverted to Private while they were undergoing training at No. 5 Base Depot.  Herbert was taken on strength in the 32nd Battalion on 17 February 1917, and promoted Temporary Corporal.  He was promoted to Temporary Sergeant ten days later.

He was wounded at Corbie in France on April 25 1918.  At this time the AIF was fending off a German attempt to seize the rail head at Amiens.  The 32nd Battalion as part of the 5th Division was defending a spur line between the river Ancre and the Somme.

Herbert recovered from his wounds and returned to duty and was promptly despatched to the Officer Training School in Oxford in the UK.   By the time he completed his training the war was over.

He was discharged on 21 September 1919.

He re-enlisted in WW2 as a Lieutenant and was commissioned into the 4th Garrison Battalion with which he served until the 'slimming down' of Australia's Military Forces once the perceived threat of Japanese invasion dissipated.

He had married Edith pear Turner and they had two children, Bob and Janice.  They in turn married Sandra and David respectively and in due course hrbert and Marth became Grandarents to Christopher, Angus Sue and Anne.

Herbert Turner died on 25 October 1971 and is interred at Adelaide's Centennial Park Cemetery.
