105 years ago today, on the 11th August 1916, Private Matthew W Roach, 13th Battalion (Reg No-4287), labourer from Hunter Street, Stockton, New South Wales, Died of Wounds received at the Battle of Pozieres, age 26.

Born at Stockton, New South Wales on the 10th December 1889 to James (died 1900 of Strand? Street, Stockton, N.S.W., and Mary Roach (re-married as SUNDQUIST, died 1919, Matthew enlisted August 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 9.8.1916 (GSW lower extremities), Matthew is resting at Puchevillers British Cemetery, France. Plot I Row F Grave 60.

Mr. Roach’s name has been inscribed on the Stockton Soldiers' Memorial (photos, unveiled on the 25th April 1922, 272 names inscribed, 65 Fallen - 

There is no memorial inscription on the headstone to Matthew’s mother Mary to tell us of the supreme sacrifice of her son during The Great War, so I will place a memorial cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite (unable because of lockdown), take a photo of the memorialised grave and upload the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
