One of the three sons of George and Jean McDonald of Maitland NSW, who served in WW1. Only one returned.
His younger brother, 2194 Pte. Robert John Mcdonald, 13th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Gallipoli 27 August 1915.
Charles was reported missing at Fromelles 19-20 July 1916 and was confirmed as killed in action on these dates about 2 months later by the Battalion CO.
Another brother served for 4 years, Lieutenant George McDonald 11th Field Artillery Brigade, having served in Gallipoli and France, returned to Australia during May 1919.
