Son of Patrick Baird Smart, 18 Pembroke Street, Surrey Hills, Victoria
After the war he returned to the family home in Pembroke Street, where he lived until around 1926. He studied to become a pharmacist and played cricket for Surrey Hills and hockey for Victoria. Charlie married Isabella Wilford Pell on 10 November 1926 at Christ Church, St Arnaud. Known as Belle, she was the daughter of William Foster and Emma Ann Pell, who had a fruit and veggie and ice cream shop at 24 Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills.
