James Andrew Ross enlisted on 24 April 1917 at the age of 21 years 8 months, single, whilst residing with his mother Fanny Elizabeth Ross.  James’s father was deceased at the time of his enlistment.  James generally used his 2nd given name of Andrew. 

Andrew was appointed to the Field Artillery Brigade 31st Reinforcements as a Gunner.  Andrew embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Port Sydney on 9 November 1917, with stops in Suez and Alexandria in Egypt and Taranto in Italy, he finally arrived in Southampton disembarking on 5 January 1918.

After training, Andrew arrived in France on 17 April 1918 and on 24 April 1918, exactly 1 year after he enlisted, was Taken on Strength with the 4th Divisional Ammunition Column, in the field in France. Andrew was transferred to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade.  After the Armistice on 11 November 1918, Andrew was transferred back to the DAC as a Driver where he remained till 20 May 1919 when he returned to England 

Andrew embarked on 12 July 1919 on the ship City of Exeter arriving in Melbourne on 24 August 1919.

ROSS.-On December 19 (suddenly), at a private hospital, Geelong, James Andrew (late First AIF.), dearly beloved husband of Jessie Elizabeth Ross, and loving father of Mavis and  Alma, aged 54 years. -Some day we'll understand.
