In December 1918 , Horse and Mule driver William was convalescing in UK - recovering from wounds received in France. The family story William told was that he had always wanted to visit a place of importance to him. It was a village in Scotland that the family thinks had been an ancestral home to the Warlands before they emigrated to Australia in the 1860's. At the time Will knew that he would probably never have another chance to visit the village. So when William was discharged from hospital, instead of returning to the barracks he caught a train to Scotland. He spent a pleasant couple of days in the village before returning to the army.
How and what happened when he returned is not known, but his record shows he was AWL for 3 days 12-15 December 1918 and forfeited 6 days pay. I think thats good value.
