MAGAREY Archibald Campbell MS MB FRCS LRCP

1882-1919

Archibald Campbell Magarey was born on 15th July 1882 in North Adelaide, South Australia the son of Alexander Thomas Magarey and Virginia, nee Campbell.  He was the grandson of Thomas Magarey who, after unsuccessful migration to New Zealand subsequently migrated to South Australia in 1845. Thomas Magarey was one of the founders of the Church of Christ in Australia, a Member of the House of Assembly for West Torrens from 1860 to 1863 and a Member of the Legislative Council from 1863 to 1865. Archibald Campbell Magarey was educated at St Peter’s College and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating in 1907.  After completing his residency at the Adelaide Hospital he went to England in 1909 and studied surgery at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington.  On his return to Australia he completed the MS at the University of Adelaide and was the second person to do so after Sir Henry Newland. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1911. Magarey married Edna Ling Stanton and they had three daughters, Constance, Virginia and Philippa and they lived at ‘Gurrawarra’, Mount Lofty in South Australia. Magarey was appointed as temporary assistant gynaecologist at the Adelaide Hospital from November 1914 until May 1915 then temporary assistant surgeon releasing Dr Wilson then Dr Cudmore  for war duties.

Magarey enlisted in the AAMC Reserve in September 1915 where he served as an area medical officer for 6 years.  He also retained the position of temporary surgeon at the Adelaide Hospital until his death in May 1919. He joined the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Forces (AN&MEF) on the 8th April 1918 and embarked on the SS Marsina on the 31st May 1918 from Sydney for Rabaul and returned to Australia on the SS Melusia for furlough his appointment was terminated on 19th January 1919. He was issued with the British War Medal. 

Archibald Campbell Magarey contracted influenza on return to Australia and died on 20th May 1919. He was buried at Stirling Cemetery, Aldgate, South Australia and was survived by his wife and three daughters.
