Edward Grattan Coates was born in Naracoorte, South Australia in 1880. He had one sister called Phyllis Burrell and his parents were Charles Ellwood and Theresa Philomene Coates who were both native to Naracoorte.

Edward went to Sturt Street public school and St Patrick's school in Adelaide , South Australia. Edward was a Roman Catholic.

Edward was a printer and lived with his sister at 4 Russell Street Adelaide, South Australia when he enlisted to join the war. Edward had blue eyes and had dark brown hair. He was 5 feet and 10 3/4 inches tall and had a fair complexion.

Edward enlisted for the war on the 24th of November 1914. Edward was 34 years old when he started serving in the war. He was part of the 10th Battalion, 2nd reinforcement. Edwards rank on enlistment was private. Edward died at the age of 36 in France. He died of wounds on the 23rd of August 1916 at 2/1 midland casualty clearing station in the field of France.

Edward was buried at the Warloy-Ballion communal cemetery extension ( plot VII , Row D, Grave No.36) France.
