George was the son of Jonathan Lea HAWKES & Harriet COOK and was born on the 2nd of May 1877 at 3 Fulton Street, St Leonards, Glenelg.

His parents were married on the 6th of November 1863 in Kensington, SA.

His father was the son of Robert HAWKES & Sarah Elizabeth FISHER and was born on the 1st of April 1839 in Pilgrim, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England.
His mother was the daughter of Peter COOK & Charlotte Emery NASH and was born on the 14th of December 1843 in Thebarton, SA.

George was the seventh child born into this family of 8 children.

His father was a cabinetmaker and builder and they lived at 3 Fulton Street, St Leonards, Glenelg.

George attended the Glenelg Public School and on leaving school he gained employment as a Bank Clerk.

In 1904 George joined the 10th Australian Infantry Regiment (Adelaide Rifles).
The South Australian Battalions were later numbered from 74 to 81, with the Adelaide Rifles becoming the 78th Battalion.


At the age of 40, George enlisted into the AIF on the 20th of February 1918 in Adelaide, SA and was allotted the service number 20532 and posted to B Company, AMC (Australian Army Medical Corps), Base Depot.

He was transferred to the Australian Army Medical Corps General Reinforcements and embarked from Adelaide on board HMT Gaika on the 6th of August 1918.
He served in England and then embarked on the 22nd of January 1920 on board HT Friedrichsruh and disembarked in Adelaide on the 9th of March.

George was discharged from the AIF on the 16th of August 1920.

George married Florence Muriel LEE nee FORD on the 5th of November 1921 in St Matthews Church, Norwood, SA.
Florence was the daughter of James Anderson FORD and was born in about 1870.

She was previously married to James LEE on the 25th of December 1890 in Nailsworth and they had 3 children, 2 of which were still living;
Leonard Walter LEE, who was born on the 23rd of August 1894 and served with the 10th Battalion in WW1 and Marjory Alma LEE was born on the 26th of July 1896.

They made their home at 5 Orange Grove, Kensington Park and George was employed as a Bank Manager.

George joined the Norwood RSL and they remained in their home for the rest of their lives.

Florence died on the 14th of November 1950 at their home, 5 Orange Grove, Kensington Park and George buried her in the Payneham Cemetery; Section EE, Path 13, Site 492, with her eldest daughter Ruby, who had died in 1909.

George died on the 14th of August 1961 and was buried in the Brighton Cemetery.

Military

At the age of 40, George enlisted into the AIF on the 20th of February 1918 in Adelaide, SA and was allotted the service number 20532 and posted to B Company, AMC (Australian Army Medical Corps), Base Depot.
He listed his father, of St Leonards, Glenelg, as his next of kin.

On the 22nd of July he was transferred to the Australian Army Medical Corps General Reinforcements.

George embarked from Adelaide on board HMT Gaika on the 6th of August 1918 and disembarked in London on the 13th of October and marched into the AMC Training Depot in Fovant.

On the 1st of June 1919 he was posted to Permanent Cadre at Tidworth Headquarters and then on the 6th of August he was posted to the 8th Field Ambulance in Tidworth.

George embarked on the 22nd of January 1920 on board HT Friedrichsruh and disembarked in Adelaide on the 9th of March.

George was discharged from the AIF on the 16th of August 1920 and awarded the British War Medal.
