According to eye witnesses, Frederick John Brown was killed instantly by a shell explosion on 12 October 1917. His younger brother 142 Pte. Robert Melbourne Brown of the 16th Battalion AIF was killed in action April 25th, 1915, age 20. Both had attended Leongatha State School in their youth.
