Private Ernest Bell Warren (Service No:1734) enlisted in the AIF on 9 March 1916 and was attached to 39th Infantry Battalion 1st Reinforcement on 27 May 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for England on board HMAT Ascanius. Private Warren transferred to 8th Infantry Battalion in France on 9 September 1916, and in December that year was evacuated to hospital in England. On 27 August 1917, Private Warren embarked from Devonport on board HMT Pakeha and was hospitalised in Cape Town begore embarking from there for Melbourne on 6 December 1917 on board HMAT Berrimah. Private Warren was attached to 8th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 28 March 1918.

Ernest was born in Mitiamo, Victoria in 1876, eldest of eight children of William Warren (b1826 in Surrey, England) and Rachel Bell (b1857 in Creswick via Ballarat, Victoria). William had been sentenced at the Old Bailey to seven years Transportation to Australia for'felonoius receipt of stolen goods' in 1848, and arrived in the Colony on Western Australia in 1851 on board the Pyrenees. Rachel's father - a Miner in Ballarat - particapted in the Eureka Stockade in 1854. William and Rachel married in Creswick via Ballarat in 1876, and in 1881 William was a Miner in Archeron. William and Warren settled in Dean via Newlyn, where they raised their family and William was Farmer until his death in 1891. Rachel remarried in 1893.

Ernest worked as a Labourer and Farmer in Dean via Newlyn, and was a member of the Dean Rifle Club. Following his Discharge from the AIF, in 1919 in Ballarat, Ernest married Elsie Selina Hartup (b1898 in Creswick via Ballarat, Victoria). Ernest and Elsie settled at Dean via Newlyn where they raised their family and Ernest was a Farmer until his death in 1949. Elsie died in 1988.
